Request Category: Private Individuals

Question Number 1:
Please can you provide the following information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the period 1 January 2020 to 31 October 2025 (or for as much of this period as your records allow). Please note, I want total figures not an annual breakdown, please.

1. Please tell me how many people were admitted to hospitals in your trust where a primary diagnosis of ICD-10 codes J45–J46 (asthma) was recorded.

For clarity, this includes:

J45 – Asthma

J45.0 – Predominantly allergic asthma

J45.1 – Non-allergic asthma

J45.8 – Mixed asthma

J45.9 – Asthma, unspecified

J46 – Status asthmaticus (severe, life-threatening asthma attack unresponsive to standard treatment)

1a. If possible, please provide the Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) of residence for these patients.
If LSOA data are not held, please provide the postcode sectors instead.

1b. If possible, please indicate how many of these patients had ICD-10 code Z58.1 (Exposure to air pollution) recorded as a contributing factor.

1c. If possible, please indicate how many of these patients were children (under 18) and how many were adults.

Question Number 2:
2. Of the patients identified in question 1, please state how many subsequently died in hospital.
(I understand these deaths may not necessarily be related to asthma.)

2a. If possible, please indicate (separately from 1a) the LSOAs - or postcode sectors if LSOA data is not held - of residence for these patients.

2b. If possible, please indicate how many of these patients were children (under 18) and how many were adults.

Answer To Question 2:
Please see our response to this FOI in the excel spreadsheet attached.

Question Number 3:
3. Please provide an ethnicity breakdown of all patients identified in question 1.

To protect patient identities while still allowing meaningful analysis, please provide aggregated data for the total period (rather than annual breakdowns).

If any categories produce very small numbers, please group ethnicities into higher-level categories as follows (using NHS England Digital’s national codes):

White: A, B, C

Mixed: D, E, F, G

Asian or Asian British: H, J, K, L

Black or Black British: M, N, P

Other ethnic groups: R, S
