Request Summary: MRI diagnostic capacity data

Request Category: Companies

Question Number 1:
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to request the following recorded information for your Trust. Where data is unavailable, please indicate that, and if only partial data is available, please provide what you can.

Are your local GPs able to request neurology MRI scans at your Trust? Yes/No

Answer To Question 1:
GPs can request neurological imaging. It is normally a suspected brain tumour/SOL or the result of a report from CT or incidental findings from other MRI scans. These requests have to be vetted by a radiologist currently.

Question Number 2:
Do admitted neurology patients have access to MRI 7 days a week? Yes/No

Answer To Question 2:
Inpatients have access to MRI from 08:00 until 20:00 7 days a week, radiologists are available 09:00-19:00 weekdays and 09:00-15:00 weekends. However, scans will only take place at weekends/out of hours after agreement with the on call radiologist based on clinical urgency. We can scan some IP brain scans over the weekend and outsource to TMC between 09:00-17:00 if there are no clinically urgent cases.

Question Number 3:
What % of neurology patients have their MRI test within 14 days from request from the most recent data available?

Answer To Question 3:
Outpatient appointment waiting time depends on the urgency rating given by the referrer. These may be 2ww, urgent or routine.

The waiting times currently for MRI are-

2ww – within 2 weeks
Urgent – within 4 – 5 weeks
Routine – currently 15 weeks

Question Number 4:
What % of neurology patients receive their MRI results within 14 days of the test from the most recent data available?

Answer To Question 4:
This would have to be a stat as we have no idea. Many OP are outsourced for reporting. IP are generally reported on the same day, some IP outsourced cases can take 24 hours.

Question Number 5:
What % of neurology patients received a diagnosis within 6 weeks from the time the diagnostic test was sent from the most recent data available?

Answer To Question 5:
Not available in a reportable format.

Question Number 6:
How many MRI scanners are there in your trust? For any of these scanners, please state the year of installation and the TESLA rating (1.5 TESLA, 3 TESLA, 7 TESLA).
