Request Summary: Profitability of Private Patient Services

Request Category: Private Individuals

Question Number 1:
The purpose of this request is to establish whether a sample of NHS hospital trusts with significant private patient activity comply with the core NHS principle of not using NHS funds to subsidise private healthcare, by assuring the board that private services are profitable.

Please respond to the following questions.

Does the authority produce a report at least annually, which shows the revenues, costs and hence surpluses from private patient activities.

Answer To Question 1:
The Trust operates a small private patient service, which accommodates mainly patients who are unable to access treatments privately elsewhere. The level of our private patient income does not warrant the reporting of financial data in that manner. However, all procedures are individually costed to ensure that the activity includes a margin of profit.

Question Number 2:
If so, please advise the most recent period for which such a report was produced? (We are not requesting a copy of the report, which we appreciate would be commercially confidential)

Answer To Question 2:
N/A

Question Number 3:
Please advise which of the following costs are allocated to private patients when measuring profitability of private patient services:

a. Direct staff costs associated with private patients

b. Consumable costs specific to private patients

c. Staff costs in services shared between NHS and private patients, including: theatres; wards; diagnostics and other services

d. Overhead staff costs such as IT, HR, and finance functions

e. An allocation of facilities costs

f. An allocation of depreciation costs

Answer To Question 3:
All of the above

Question Number 4:
Please advise the most recent date when a board meeting or a sub-committee of a board received a report which related to the profitability of private patient services.

Answer To Question 4:
N/A

Question Number 5:
Please provide a copy of the relevant minute of the relevant meeting referred to in question 4.

Answer To Question 5:
N/A

Question Number 6:
Without stating the figure, please advise whether private patient services made a positive financial contribution in the financial year 2024-25

Answer To Question 6:
