What is Soft Tissue Sarcoma?

Soft Tissue Sarcomas are rare cancers, accounting for around 1% of all malignant tumours. They can occur at any age but are more common in middle-aged and older adults, and less common in younger people.

There are many types of Soft Tissue Sarcoma. The most common include:

    • Liposarcoma
    • Leiomyosarcoma
    • Synovial Sarcoma
    • Spindle Cell Sarcoma
    • Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour

Around 60% of soft tissue sarcomas develop in the arms or legs. Approximately 20% occur in the trunk, 5% in the head and neck, and 15-20% in the abdomen or internal organs. The most common sarcoma arising from the digestive tract is Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST).

While soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is more common overall in older adults, specialist centres see patents of all ages. At Southampton Hospital, patients are seen from the age of 16 years old and above.
